Here it is…the unedited text from the student who bravely shared her truth, her experience, her story that was referenced in Ann Bauer’s tweet, which was retweeted 3K+ times in its first 12 hours.

“In November, I got to a dark spot and I needed help, but I didn’t recognize it because I had never been there before.

I didn’t know how I felt talking about this at first but I realized, there are so many student who are struggling right now and there are too many students that aren’t here anymore to share their struggle.

It’s not “just a year”, a year matters. Each year of our lives matter, every year is essential. To wake up and open a computer alone in your room, who notices you’re gone, what difference does it make? Who notices if your one inch bubble doesn’t show up on a google meet? You don’t even see your friends anyways, it doesn’t make a difference to them.

I needed to know that my teacher would notice an empty seat where I was suppose to be sitting. I needed to know my friends would miss seeing me at the lunch table. I needed to know my carpool would be waiting to pick me up, and that my team would be missing a person in the routine. We need that interaction, we need to know someone cares if we don’t show up, we need to know someone will notice if we’re gone, we need to know someone counting on us to be there.

I know school isn’t going to be the same, but we have to figure out a way to get back to school, it’s time. The students have been willing to adapt but it’s frustrating that our leaders haven’t. The student’s lives are essential, and we are suffering.”

Stop evaluating lives as one more worthy than another. Start listening to all those who are hurting not from the pandemic, but from the results of policies and procedures that have been scientifically proven to be harmful to our children.
